Sugar Metabolism

Glucose and fructose are both sugars, but they are processed (metabolized) by the body entirely differently from one another, as follows:

Sugar Metabolism

Whereas these equations are a bit of a simplification, they are basically true.  Moreover, the fat that is produced from fructose is belly fat, visceral fat (beer belly).  It is fat that forms around the liver and other vital organs.

It is certainly possible to get too much glucose by overeating bread, potatoes, and so on. If that occurs, then the body also produces fat.  However, this fat is stored under the skin, subcutaneous fat, which is available for energy if we skip a meal.

Alcohol (from beer, wine, whisky, and so on) is metabolized by the liver in a similar manner to fructose.  You have, perhaps, heard of cirrhosis of the liver, which is caused by consuming an excess of alcohol.  But did you know that there is a similar disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is, very likely, caused by consuming excess fructose?*
